The ancient Francigena Way, the road traveled by pilgrims from all over Europe heading to Rome.
Starting from the Castle of Monteriggioni, you can reach small villages such as the nearby Castel Petraio, a castle transformed into a villa during the 15th century, and Abbadia Isola, an important point of welcome and refreshment for the pilgrims of the Francigena Way, famous for its church with two portals on the main façade, similar to the entrance of the Church of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem.
You can also travel the Francigena towards Siena, the queen of Gothic, where the oldest hospital and shelter in the territory stood, the Santa Maria della Scala, now a prestigious Museum Complex. An alternative route north leads to Colle Val d'Elsa, a city with ancient origins that has become famous worldwide as the "City of Crystal" for its extensive glass production.
You continue to San Gimignano, a splendid example of a medieval city, remaining intact in its urban connotation, famous for the numerous towers that adorn it. This beautiful village is also completely crossed by the Francigena Way, which continues to reach Certaldo, a medieval village that gave birth to Boccaccio, to finally arrive in Tavarnelle.
In collaboration with environmental guides, Hotel Monteriggioni organizes numerous types of routes, starting from Monteriggioni and other historic centers in the province of Siena.
